THE MONOPRINT

As a printmaker and lover of color, I had leftover inks on my palette. I began rolling, painting, daubing the colors on the back of an etching plate and running them through a press. I love the surprises. I took a workshop at Santa Reparata Graphic Arts Center in Florence, Italy in watercolor monoprinting. I explored landscape imagery: Viaggio: Toscana, Viaggio: Colorado; medieval illuminated manuscripts, GODDESS; Renaissance art, Botticelli's Birth of Venus, Caravaggio's Medusa and Donatello's Mary Magdalene; southwestern rock art, Hocker series; and medieval alchemy, see alchemy.

I use Winsor & Newton watercolor paints, Caran D'Ache Aquarelle crayons, Rostow & Jung water based inks, oil paint sticks and water and oil based inks. I create images on plexiglass plates which can be layered and printed. Most prints are run through an etching press, a few are hand printed. Using Transparent litho base rolled on the plate helps release the ink in hand prints.

Monoprints give me permission to play. It is entering the mystery. Trusting the process is essential. Monoprinting is the flip side of meticulously creating and printing an etching or collagraph. I teach monoprint workshops. I invite you to come and play. Please check the calendar for when and where.
